History

The church of the Holy Ghost is located on the site of the ancient Roman forum of Assria. This church has been destroyed and restored several times in its history, the last time during the Croatian war for independence. When the bishop of Nin visited the site in 1700, after the Venetian-Ottoman wars, the church was in ruins, but ready for restoration. It was then dedicated to the Holy Ghost. During the restoration that followed a lot of ancient fragments scaterred around were used as construction material.

Research

The existence of the early Christian monuments on the site was suspected for a long time, and since systematic research started in 1998, there have emerged valuable findings. The research in the Holy Ghost revealed remains that allow a reconstruction of an early Christian building. It was a single nave church with a round apse and a narthex. This narthex, a part of which is still visible on the south side of the present church, is believed to have been the meeting place of the earliest Christian community in Asseria.
