In 1743 Benkovac became a curacy and the parish was founded in 1840. The church was dedicated to the Birth of the Holy Virgin Mary, while the patron saint of Benkovac is St. Anthony of Padua. The church was built in 1864. In 1962 a rather significant restoration work was done on it. During the Croatian Homeland War 1991-1995 the church was completely demolished. It was not recounstructed - instead, a new church was erected on the same spot in 2003.
