Description

Banjevci is a village about 20 kilometers to the south of Benkovac. The church of St. John stands in the village graveyard, close to the newly built parish church on the main road that goes through the village. St. John is an interesting Romanesque building from the 12th century. It belongs to a group of churches in the area with similar characteristics. As St. Michael in Vukšiæ, St. Petka in Kolarina and Archangel Michael in Miranje, it has a single barrel-vaulted nave with a round apse. It shares another characteristic with the church in Miranje - a large tower at the west side. The tower in Banjevci has the same width as the nave behind it. The lateral walls are supported with strong pillars.

HIstory

The original form of the church has been well preserved, but some alterations have been made. The portion on the north side was added to get more room for the sacristy - this was first mentioned in the records in 1822. There is a record of major restoration work in 1718.
